A method of flash sintering a ceramic. The method comprises flash sintering a powder compact comprising the ceramic by passing an electrical current through the powder compact. The powder compact comprises an additive that, whilst the current is passed, reduces the electrical conductivity of a region of the powder compact that has started to undergo flash sintering.
