Reduction of Heating Energy Consumption of Existing Public Buildings Through the Use of IoT
Public buildings are widely distributed throughout cities and municipalities, serving as important elements of daily life and infrastructure. Examining their energy-saving potential and implementing standardized solutions is a worthwhile endeavor due to their similar usage and construction patterns. While refurbishment measures often incur high costs and restrict building usage, substantial reductions in costs and CO2 emissions can be achieved through efficient and user-specific control of the building using minimally invasive methods. In this paper, we present an approach to reducing heating energy demand in a public school by employing energy monitoring and occupancy techniques. We have developed a transferable energy monitoring concept that allows us to understand the energy demand in relation to building usage and take regulatory actions accordingly. By conducting thermal simulations, we demonstrate potential savings of up to 36 % through these measures, specifically for our example building.
