Fixation of CO2 and production of O2 by the trees of an urban park in Villavicencio - Meta (Colombia)
To highlight the importance of urban trees in the municipality of Villavicencio, the amount of fixed CO2 and the O2 released by the trees present in the largest urban park in the city were estimated. The dasometric variables of forest individuals with DBH ≥ 15cm were used and it was estimated using the i-Tree ECO software. The ideal species for urban trees were determined, based on the evaluation of the ecosystem service of CO2 fixation and O2 release. The results showed that the trees have set a total of 2,149.36 tons of CO2 eq and released a total of 1,561.7 tons of O2. Among the ideal species for urban trees are: Parkia pendula, Ceiba pentandra and Cassia grandis. Concluding the contribution of urban trees in the environmental quality and the quality of life of the people in Villavicencio.
