Towards Green Transportation: Control Carbon Footprints Using Cloud Computing Approach
Global warming is considered an alarming issue for the whole of humanity. The manufacturing and food supply chains are significantly contributing to large-scale carbon emissions and groceries supply chain is one of the segments of the food industry having a considerable carbon footprint throughout its logistics supply chain. The small and medium-sized stakeholders usually have lack of technical and financial resources to optimize and measure carbon emissions at their end. Therefore, this paper proposed an integrated system using Cloud Computing Technology (CCT) where all stakeholders of a grocery supply chain can minimize carbon emissions at reasonable expenses and infrastructure. We have designed and implemented a smart shelf in a grocery that can detect the shortage of grocery items and send real-time information to retailers through the cloud. The integrated approach of mapping the entire groceries supply chain by a single cloud to certain retailers will improve the coordination among its stakeholders, reduce the number of unnecessary suppliers' trips and reduce carbon footprint.
