Gabor Wavelet based Urban Change Detection for Remotely Sensed Data with Accuracy Assessment
Rapid growth, modernization and industrialization created a negative impact on the environment by destructing the natural wealth. The major change is in the replacement of agricultural and forestland by concrete buildings and asphalt highways as cities for accommodating the growing population. When there is a potential growth in the cities due to rapid industrialization, the population also increases due to the migration of people from rural areas. An unplanned, uncontrolled urban development in the areas adjoining the cities is referred as urban sprawl. Addition to the degradation of agricultural lands, urban sprawl significantly impacts the human health. Thus the Detection of urban growth change will provide a up-to-date information to the planners and administrators, to offer the basic needs and infrastructure for urban environment. The objective is to investigate the most effective change detection methods for identifying changes in urban areas in semi-arid environments. The aim of the paper is to develop a novel algorithm for classification and change detection of remotely sensed data for urban growth monitoring and also to perform the accuracy assessment on the results through field visits using GPS receiver. In this paper, the analysis is based on the study of growth in Madurai Metropolitan Area, Tamilnadu using IIRS LISS II and LISS III imagery.
