Social media for clinical management of neurologic diseases: An HTA approach
Clinical use of social media can easily reach and empower groups of population at risk or affected by chronic diseases, and promote improvement of quality of life. In the paper we present an assessment of information and communication technologies applications in the management of neurological disorders, carried out in the context of the Healthcare Trust of the Autonomous Province of Trento (Italy) according to Health Technology Assessment criteria. A systematic review of literature was performed to evaluate technical features, safety and effectiveness of social media and Web 2.0 (e-mails, blogs, virtual communities, video sharing systems, web applications, social networking sites, mobile apps…). To understand usage rate and attitude towards new technologies of patients and professionals, we performed a context analysis based on a survey of 93 neurological patients. At last, we made recommendations for decision makers in order to allow the consideration of solutions allowing people to interact and collaborate for clinical management in a context of prioritization of investments.
