Language Effect on Academic Examination Scores of International Students in Higher Education
Student performances in examinations of academic subjects are influenced by a complex array of factors. In this study we investigated the effect of language on students’ performance in examinations of Business and Science subjects - namely World of Business and Introduction to Mechanics, Power and Materials - and compared this with the effect of language on the students’ test performance in Mathematics. Students on International Foundation programmes at a higher education institution (HEI) were given standard assessments and their scores in these subjects were compared against their English scores. Regression analysis was performed to find out if students’ scores in these subjects showed any significant positive correlation with their English scores. Statistical analysis revealed that the effect of language is more significant on the performance in Business and Science tests than on the performance in the Mathematics test.
