Model predictive control for flood regulation
In this paper, the flood situation of Surat, India, due to uncontrolled outflow from Ukai dam on Tapti river, Gujarat, India is discussed. A simplified model of the Ukai dam is derived based on Continuity Equation. To mitigate the problem, Model Predictive Control has been proposed as a solution. Simulations are done on a real time system and a real flood situation is considered. The results using MPC are compared with the data of the actual flood situation. The simulation results clearly indicate that had MPC been used to regulate the floods, the floods could have been prevented or at least minimized to a large extent. The main contribution of this paper is that MPC has been proposed for flood regulation in Ukai dam in Surat, which is a novel technique, proposed to mitigate the problem of uncontrolled outflow from dams in India leading to floods. The task of controlling outflow of water from the dam while maintain volume of water in it as desired is very conveniently achieved using MPC, while taking future inflow as well as current inflow to the dam, into account.
