Construed geotechnical characteristics of foundation beds by seismic measurements
Applications of geophysical techniques in engineering investigations are currently of growing interest. The October 1992 earthquake in Egypt and its destructive impact on some man-made constructions has increased the use of geophysical methods in engineering surveys. Determining the exact depth to the bedrock and its lithological type, the depth to the water table, the lateral changes in lithology, and the detection of fractures, cracks or faults are important parameters in the assessment of an engineering site. In the present study, collected travel time data are interpreted using the intercept-time technique in order to estimate the dynamic characteristics (N-value; Poisson's ratio; stress ratio; concentration index; rock quality design factor (RQD); ultimate and allowable bearing capacity) of the ground at site. The depths of the subsurface layers are also evaluated. Two new relationships between RQD and both longitudinal and shear velocities are suggested. The resultant geotechnical parameters based on seismic measurements are found to be reasonable and realistic for engineering studies being carried out in New Cairo City.
