Bridge Superstructure Research. Task 3. Final Designs and Details for Simple Span Bridges Made Continuous
This investigation was undertaken to develop standard details and supporting design information for retrofitting existing simple span bridges for continuity. By making the deck slab continuous, expansion joints that permit water to penetrate to the girders and substructure below can be eliminated. A major source of bridge deterioration is thus removed or minimized. In addition, the removal of expansion joints improves ride characteristics. The standard details presented in this report are based on a review of current retrofit practice in the United States and Canada, and analytical studies conducted to address several issues related to retrofitting existing bridges. Details are presented for prestressed concrete I-girders, prestressed concrete box beams, and steel I-girders. Two categories of retrofit detail are provided.
