Stresses and Deformations in Jail Gulch Embankment
The report presents a comprehensive case history of stress and deformation measured by field instrumentation in the 200-foot high Jail Gulch highway embankment. Theoretical analyses using the finite-element method, were conducted to predict the stresses and deformations in the Jail Gulch embankment. Theoretical equations were developed for calculating the nonlinear, stress dependent tangent modulus of elasticity of soil using parameters obtained from triaxial compression tests on soil samples. Poission's ratio of 0.3 was found for the Jail Gulch embankment material which yields results best agreeing with the field data. The finite element computer program and its users manual are presented as appendices. Also presented in an appendix are the equations and procedures developed for calculating the principal stresses and the maximum shear stresses from the field-measured stresses at different orientations.
