The purpose of the report is to describe the potential benefits that would be associated with the evolution of a field of building diagnostics that addresses all aspects of building performance. To accomplish this, the report first offers a definition of building diagnostics and describes its evolution. The report then addresses the subject of building performance requirements, considering in turn a number of building systems and components. Next it examines the steps that are, or can be, taken in design, construction, and building management to achieve performance goals, and it identifies ways in which building diagnostics could be helpful at various stages in the life-cycle of a building. The report concludes by discussing the market for building diagnostics, the motivation for building owners and managers to undertake diagnostics, and the attributes that might characterize building diagnostics as a coherent filed of professional practice.
