The Stabilization of Silty Soils
For the purpose of confirming and possibly modifying the predicted conclusions of a laboratory study to find a suitable means of stabilizing silty soils in Rhode Island, previously reported, a test road was constructed and its performance evaluated. A test road, consisting of two twelve foot travel lanes and two ten foot shoulders was constructed in Middletown, RI in 1967. The test road was composed of two 600 ft. control sections and five 600 ft. experimental soil cement sections having different amounts of Portland cement and sodium sulfate. Performance was evaluated by means of plate bearing tests, Benkelman beam tests, compressive strength, and the roughometer. Temperature and moisture were recorded at various depths up to 24 inches at three different locations. It was concluded that additional soil cement pavements should be constructed where soil conditions are suitable.
