PORT-R-SPAN, Phase II. Final Technical Report
The Michigan State Hog Confinement Research Building is completed and ready for use. This facility is a pre-manufactured building using a frame and panel design. This building system will be used to evaluate the latest in the state-of-the-art of producing hogs in confinement buildings, as a teaching tool for the future hog producers, and the development and evaluation of passive solar aid in reducing the energy requirements of the building. It has already been proven that there is a substantial gain in feed conversion and a significant drop in death rate of hogs properly raised in confinement. These gains are largely due to reduced stress on confinement animals. This requires that the building be capable of providing the optimum in the areas of heat, ventilation, humidity control, lighting and feed. (ERA citation 09:013526)
