Investigation of Hydrated Lime-Asphalt and Aggregate interactions
Serviceability of bituminous materials is a desirable asset in the design and construction of highway pavements. Some characteristics of asphalts - aggregates or their mixtures that have an effect on the useful service life of a highway pavement include: adhesion between the asphalt-aggregate interface in the dry and wet state, hardening rate of the asphaltic cement, and the interaction of different bituminous cements and aggregates. The degree to which hydrated lime influences these characteristics varies depending upon the asphalt, aggregate, type of lime and amount of lime added. Since the addition of hydrated lime has the potential to enhance some physical characteristics of certain asphalt-aggregate combinations, it is the objective of this study investigation to provide guidelines to determine the best combination of aggregate, asphalt and lime at a given location.
