Ibis: The Integrated Building Industry System
The report describes the recently-developed operational prototype of the Integrated Building Industry System (IBIS), a computer-based cost analysis tool for use in the design of low-cost housing. IBIS permits an architect to describe his design to a computer, obtain a rapid cost estimate, and then modify his design to learn what effect his changes have made upon construction cost. This project shows: (1) that the computer can serve as a useful tool in guiding designers in choices between design and material alternatives, and (2) that both design time and construction costs may reduced by this technique.
