Evaluation of Snowplowable Raised Reflective Pavement Markers in New Jersey
The Stimsonite Model 99-K snowplowable raised reflective pavement marker was evaluated for its ability to withstand snowplowing operations and traffic in central New Jersey. Castings are evaluated for their durability as well as the damage they cause to snowplow blades. Five reflector assembly types are also evaluated and rated for loss and damage by type. Results showed that steel blades had no effect on castings, whereas tungsten carbide insert blades caused gouging and scraping on casting surfaces. Carbide inserts were damaged in the tests. Reflector losses are attributed to the effects of traffic as well as to snowplowing. An estimate of the cost to install and maintain markers is itemized.
