Investigation of Buried Domes. Phase IV. Static Response of Flexible Domes Buried in Sand
A series of tests was conducted on three 12-inch-diameter hemispherical domes buried in 20-30 Ottawa sand. The domes were constructed of Plexiglas and had radius-to-thickness ratios ranging from 60 to 150. They were supported on a rigid layer with 12 inches of cover over the crown of the dome and tested by applying uniform static pressures up to 500 psi to the surface of the soil. Each dome was instrumented with thirty foil-type electrical strain gages at ten gage stations on the inside surface of the dome. In addition to the strain measurements, the total vertical load transmitted to the dome and the crown deflection of the dome were recorded during the tests. The dome itself was treated as a pressure transducer in that the experimentally measured strains were used to backcalculate the soil pressure distribution on the dome. The pressure distribution on the dome was found to depend on the dome stiffness, the overpressure level, and the loading history. (Author)
