Instability of Horizontally Curved Members. Lateral Buckling of Curved Plate Girders
The lateral bending behavior of horizontally curved plate girders is studied analytically. A second order mathematical model for determining radial bending effects is derived. Using this model, the elastic and inelastic behavior of curved girders subjected to bending and torsion is studied. The influence of various parameters such as the curvature and geometric proportions of the girder on this behavior is illustrated. Design recommendations for lateral bracing spacing and bracing requirements for curved plate girder bridges are also presented. (Author)
