Review of Construction Methods for Use in Landslide-Prone Areas
In Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, comparatively minor landslides have caused road damage, home destruction and death. Although landslide problems are common, building and development in slide-prone areas continue without zoning or construction control. Therefore, the Allegheny County Department of Planning and Development is currently designing an improved approach to managing land use. Various construction procedures are discussed within this study. They are intended to serve as guidelines for those who will actually engage in design investigations and construction in slide-prone areas. Fifteen methods are individually examined according to the following aspects: (1) a general description; (2) technical analysis; (3) construction costs analysiin (4) recommendations for construction based on the technical and cost analyses; and (5) a graphical representation. The procedures are presented in a format adaptable to many areas.
