In June 1996, we celebrate the 40th anniversary of what is now officially called the Dwight D. Eisenhower System of Interstate and Defense Highways. In this publication, we honor five men who, together, shared that vision and provided the leadership to make the legislation possible: Sen. Albert Gore, Sr., of Tennessee; Rep. George H. Fallon of Maryland; Rep. Hale Boggs of Louisiana; Francis C. (Frank) Turner of the U.S. Bureau of Public Roads (now the Federal Highway Administration); and, of course, President Eisenhower.
