Report on Full Scale Racking Tests Carried Out on TRADA Demonstration House
Simulated wind speed loads of 52m/s and greater were applied at different positions to a platform frame panel construction house in order to assess the stiffness of the house at various stages of construction. Measurement of the deflections indicated that plasterboard linings increased the general stiffness by 60%. The weight of the construction prevented sliding on the concrete base, and addition of external single brick veneer to the ground floor and timber boarding to the first floor did not significantly increase the stiffness. Investigation into the true effect of external masonry veneer on the performance and stability of the house was recommended. Calculations were carried out to determine the magnitude of loads applied to loading beams and racking resistance.
