Load Rating Steel and Concrete Girder Bridges in Missouri
This study investigated the impact of the AASHTO guide Specifications for Strength Evaluation of Steel and Concrete Bridges (STRENGTH method) on 40 steel and 33 concrete bridges in Missouri. The STRENGTH method is a reliability-based Load and Resistance Factor Rating procedure. The varible factors depend on levels of redundancy, deterioration, inspection, maintenance, truck volume, and weight enforcement. Selection of these factors is quite subjective, requiring considerable engineers is necessary for a consistent and accurate application of the provisions. An advantage of the procedures is the opportunity to increase ratings with extra inspection and maintenance efforts.
