Characterization of Wyoming Hot Mix Asphalt with the Asphalt Pavement Analyzer
Two potential strength tests, often referred to as 'proof tests' are the Superpave shear tester and the asphalt pavement analyzer (APA). This report describes WYDOT's initial evaluation of the APA as a proof tester. The APA was used to evaluate the rutting resistance of field mixes made from crushed limestone quarried in the Black Hills. Air voids, asphalt grading, and cure time effects on APA rut depth were evaluated using regression analysis. The predominant predictor of rut depth was the asphalt high temperature grading. Regression analysis showed that at, for example, 4% air voids, there is approximately three times the amount of rutting with a PG 58 - 28 limestone mix compared to a PG 64 - 28 limestone mix. The effect of air voids was significant, but less pronounced. The effect of cure time appeared to be a factor, but the range in cure times was too limited to draw any conclusions.
