The Magnitude and Cost of Minor Instability in the Side Slopes of Earthworks on Major Roads
Information was obtained on the frequency of occurrence and the cost of correction of instability on a 350 km length of motorway and a 140 km length of major trunk road. The results of the study indicate that the instability is mainly confined to short lengths of relatively deep cutting and high embankment and is closely related to the soil types and local drainage conditions. The annual expenditure on instability in the side slopes of trunk roads was found to be negligible. Whilst it is shown that the problem is not sufficiently serious to warrant any fundamental change in the current methods used for slope design or construction, the study does indicate that particular care is necessary in the design of drainage installations and in the construction of slope profiles in cutting areas.
