Recent Advances in Residential Smoke Detection
An early warning fire detection device which shows great promise is the single-station, smoke detector. An increasing number of the U.S. building codes are requiring the installation of single-station smoke detectors in all new housing. There are problems, however, with several of the single-station, smoke detectors on the market. In addition, there is a lack of good published performance standards for these detectors, standards that would improve the quality of smoke detectors offered for sale in the marketplace and would eliminate many of the problems. The National Bureau of Standards, in conjunction with the approvals testing laboratories and the detector manufacturers, is developing performance standards for the single-station, smoke detector. This development is discussed.
