Expansion Joints in Buildings
In an attempt to develop expansion joint criteria that would have broad applicability and acceptability, this report provides valuable information for structural engineers and architects involved in the design of buildings in which thermal expansion is an important consideration. The scope of the report is confined to horizontal movement only. Most building types and all climatic conditions experienced in the United States are considered. Factors discussed include building dimensions and configuration, design temperature change, provision for temperature control, type of structural frame, type of connection to the foundation, and materials of construction. Accompanying the text are the results of a computer analysis showing the stresses and movements that occur in some typical structural frames as a result of temperature changes and a compilation of relevant temperature data for over 100 cities in the United States.
