Interaction of River Hydraulics and Morphology with Riverine Dredging Operations
The objectives of this study are to determine the interaction of riverine dredging operations with the morphology and hydraulics of a river system; to examine current open water disposal practices in relation to river morphology; and to investigate the feasibility of disposing dredged material in the main channel region of the river. In the primary study area, the Mississippi River above Cairo, Illinois, construction of contraction works and navigation dams has taken place concurrently with dredging, and each simultaneously affected water and sediment transport characteristics of the river. Consequently, the analysis of this study establishes, first, the morphology of the natural river, then the combined effects of development activities on the river, and, finally, the response of the system to the activity of primary concern, dredging and disposal operations.
