Containment Area Facility Concepts for Dredged Material Separation, Drying, and Rehandling
This study resulted in concepts for reuse or extended use of confined disposal areas, and alternatives for processing and removing portions of dredged material that can be used for such things as landfill and construction materials. As such, the three major areas of research included the study of dredged material separation, the study of dredged material drying, and the development of concepts for facilities for dredged material separation, drying, and rehandling. Coarse-grained dredged materials usually drain freely after their separation from organic and fine-grained materials. On the other hand, fine-grained dredged materials do not drain as freely and natural, unaided drying requires considerable time in most cases. Consequently, the study of the drying of the coarse-grained materials concentrated on the development of processes for dewatering of the material to a state where the moisture content would pose no problem to its handling and transport.
