Privately owned housing starts in May were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1,676,000. This is 6 (+ or - 6) percent above the revised April rate of 1,576,000 and 9 (+ or - 7) percent above the May 1998 figure of 1,541,000. Single-family housing starts in May 1999 were at a rate of 1,409,000; this is 13 (+ or - 6 percent) above the April figure of 1,249,000. The May rate for units in buildings with five units or more was 238,000. The May rate for units in buildings with two to four units was 29,000.
