Behaviour of Bolts in Rock and Testing of Rock Bolts
The behavior of bolts in rock has been investigated. In hard rock, the deformation of grouted bolts is concentrated to the vicinity of cracks in the rock. Both shear and axial deformation occurs. In soft rock, axial deformation is more uniformly distributed along the bolt. At shear and axial testing of bolts, several parameters like rock hardness, borehole size, shear movement of the joint, are influencing the bolts load capacity and deformability. Tests performed under different conditions are thus not comparable. Axial testing is described as laboratory testing, whereby a dilating joint is simulated, and in situ pull testing. In soft rock, axial testing is more important while in hard rock both shear and axial testing is of importance.
