Study and Recommendations on the San German Vaulted Brick Tunnel Storm Sewer System
A vaulted brick storm sewer system of uncertain origin, which in the past has suffered partial collapse, is still in use under the city of San German. The project intended to establish its route, structural integrity, future adequacy and tourism potential. The system's main tunnel was photographed, reconnoitered, surveyed and drawn. Visual inspections and dye tests located the limits of the drainage basin. A 24-hour composite sample of stream water was analyzed for pollutants. The city archives were searched for historical records and knowledgable persons were interviewed. The tunnel needs a service access, repair of its leaking damaged floors, and removal of raw sewage discharges. At present, parts of the system threaten collapse, which would affect flood control and neighboring streets and buildings.
