Residential Livability: A Socio-Physical Perspective
The study was concerned with those aspects of the dwelling and neighborhood, that low-income blacks and whites were satisfied or dissatisfied with. Attitudinal measures such as casual neighboring, neighborhood solidarity and privacy were used to explain the native of satisfaction with the residents environment. Pictures of site planning alternatives and house types were used in conjunction with trade of questions weighing relocation against the costs and benefits of new neighbors, ownership and more space. Findings suggest strong correlations between dwelling and neighborhood satisfaction. Neighborhood services were considered more important than conveniences. In the dwelling, size and appearance were the most important evaluative criteria. The need for private outdoor space was a single important factor contributing to the residents satisfaction.
