A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Proposed Wilderness Classification, Haleakala National Park, Hawaii
The National Park Service proposes that 19,270 acres of Haleakala National Park be designated as wilderness. An area of 5,500 acres is also proposed as potential wilderness addition, to be designated by the Secretary of the Interior as wilderness at such time as it qualifies under the terms of the Wilderness Act. The total environmental impact will be the preservation of a large portion of the central mountain mass of East Maui in a completely undeveloped state. Positive benefits include cultural, social, and scientific. Adverse effects include increased costs of management, curtailment of some research projects, possible rationing of use in the future, and mass recreation needs being provided in coastal areas.
