Analysis and Full-Scale Lateral Load Tests. Pile Group Foundations
Lateral load tests were performed on three groups of six piles each and two isolated single piles (one vertical and one batter). Two groups had vertical piles, one group with 4 ft. spacing and one group with 3 ft. spacing. The third group also had 3 ft. spacing but four of the piles were battered to a slope of 3.5 to 1. The loading sequence was intended to simulate that of bridge abutment foundations. The results indicate that each pile in a group having 4 ft. spacing has a lateral load resistance approximately 4.3 times that of a single vertical pile while for a group having 3 ft. spacing the increase in lateral capacity is only by a factor of 2.2. The results also indicate that batter piles and groups containing batter piles undergo large amounts of lateral deflection even when subjected to vertical loads only. (Modified author abstract)
