Technical Recommendations for Highways: Nomenclature and Methods for Describing the Condition of Asphalt Pavements
A set of terms for describing the condition of asphalt pavements is proposed. These are divided into two classes. The first covers functional aspects i.e. those that affect the comfort, safety and convenience of the road user. The second covers structural aspects, i.e. those that determine the resistance of the pavement to the effects of traffic and the environment. Because distress plays a major role in the assessment of pavements, methods for describing it are presented in considerable detail. A few examples of how these terms are used in practice are given. Finally, the terms defined are summarized in a Glossary.
