A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Fatigue behavior of highway bridge cables under wind loading is investigated in this report in a comprehensive analytical manner using methodologies of linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM). The report includes (1) the formulation of deflections and bending stresses of highway bridge cables under wind-induced and vortex shedding vibrations; and (2) the formulation of the fatigue behavior of bridge cables in terms of fatigue crack initiation and fatigue crack propagation in bridge cables and in constituent wires. The report further includes a discussion on the fatigue testing of wires and cables and an extensive outline of recommended research programs on the subject from both analytical and experimental standpoints.
