Fatality Assessment and Control Evaluation (FACE) Report: Fire Captain Suffers Sudden Cardiac Death during a Live-Fire Training Exercise in North Carolina
On January 25, 2003, a 51 year-old male Fire Captain collapsed during the first few minutes of a live-fire training exercise. NIOSH was notified of this fatality in February 2003 by the United States Fire Administration and the Office of the State Fire Marshal--North Carolina. On June 29, 2004, an occupational medicine physician from the NIOSH Fire Fighter Fatality Investigation Team and a fire-rescue safety specialist from the Office of the State Fire Marshal office traveled to the Fire Department (FD) to conduct an onsite investigation of the incident.
