Proposed Spirit Mountain Recreation Area, St. Louis County, Minnesota
The City of Duluth, Minnesota, proposes to develop a year-round recreation complex to be known as the Spirit Mountain Recreation Area on land owned by the city of Duluth. The purpose of the project is to improve the economic situation in the Duluth area and to provide recreational opportunities for the local population and tourists. The project would change a wooded, little used area of about 920 acres into an intensely used recreation complex. Consultants expect that the project would attract 250,000 - 400,000 visitors/year, generating additional income and creating jobs for the Duluth area. The development of ski lifts, trails, central recreation building, parking area, campground, support facilities and utility lines will cause the removal of about 100 acres of second growth deciduous forest.
