Friction Pile Capacity Prediction in Soft Louisiana Soils Using Electric Quasi-Static Penetration Tests
The main objective of this study was to investigate the possibility of using the electronic cone penetrometer data to predict the load carrying capacity of piles driven in soft cohesive soils. Selection of the locations involved in this study was based on their subsoil condition, accessibility, and whether they contained test pile(s) of known capacities. A total of 10 sites and 37 full scale test piles covering various shapes lengths, and materials were chosen. The cone penetration tests were performed as closely as possible to the location of the test piles using tips of different size and angle. However, the results of the study presented are based on the data collected using an electronic cone penetrometer of 60 degrees tip angle and 10 sq cm base area pushed at the rate of 2 cm/s. The intent was to utilize the penetration results directly in computation of pile capacities.
