People and Downtown; Use, Attitudes, Settings
An urban renewal demonstration grant project, applied and evaluated methods used to discern how people react to the downtown environment. Generally, the purpose of urban renewal was to improve existing physical environments. Previously, CBD-renewal evaluations have depended mainly upon vicarious indicators--epidemiological, social, and economic. The study demonstrates methods of behavioral analysis, and how these methods may be applied to determine improvements in the CBD environment. The main concern is with the central business district--an area subject to heavy pedestrian use. The Seattle CBD and its users served as the test case. The Portland CBD and a Seattle district regional shopping center were used for purposes of comparison. (Author)
