Spillway and Outlet Works, Fort Randall Dam, Missouri River, South Dakota: Hydraulic Model Investigation
Model investigations of Fort Randall Dam were concerned primarily with the hydraulic performance of the chute-type, gate-controlled spillway and four 22-ft-diameter, gate-controlled flood-control tunnels; however, a study also was made of the passage of diversion flows through the flood-control and eight 28-ft-diameter power tunnels. Three undistorted models were used in accomplishing the investigations: (a) a 1:100-scale comprehensive model for study of spillway flows, (b) a 1:50-scale model of the stilling basin for the flood-control tunnels and of the temporary stilling basin for dissipating the energy of diversion flows through the power tunnels, and (c) a 1:25-scale model of the flood-control tunnel.
