Finite Element Analysis of Arch Dams and Foundations

The development and utilization of a computer program for the 3-dimensional analysis of an arch dam and foundation are discussed. Different types of modeling elements were investigated because the concrete arch of the dam is essentially a thick shell structure, while the foundation rock is an arbitrary 3-dimensional solid. To represent the arch dam, thick shell elements with midsurface nodes (THKSHEL) and 3-dimensional thick shell elements (3DSHEL) were investigated. Foundation representation was investigated using both an isoparametric hexahedron element (3D) and a Vogt element. The computer program analyzed the stresses and displacements caused by loads from water pressure, gravity, and temperature changes. (Author)
