Rotary Cone Penetrometer Investigations in Clay
A field investigation was made to study the feasibility of determining the in situ shear strength of soft clay deposits using existing rotary cone penetrometer equipment. Five cone penetration borings were made adjacent to previously made undisturbed sample borings and field vane borings. The cone penetration data were correlated with shear strength from laboratory unconfined compression and unconsolidated-undrained triaxial compression (Q) tests and also with field vane shear strength. The results of the correlations of cone thrust T divided by projected cone area Ac with shear strength s indicated that a relation of T/Ac = 18s (or s = 5.2T for the 10-sq-cm projected area of the cone used in the investigation) provides a reasonable estimate of variation of shear strength with depth for the normally consolidated clays tested.
