Olympic Park Institute and Rosemary Inn Historic District Improvement Project Environmental Assessment
This environmental assessment analyzes the impacts of several different alternatives related to the long term management of the Olympic Park Institute (OPI) within Olympic National Park (ONP). This document analyzes the no action alternative and three action alternatives and the various environmental, cultural, and operational impacts of each alternative. The action alternatives include variations of development at the OPI campus, and different levels of historical and cultural landscape rehabilitation of the Rosemary Inn Historic District where the campus is located. OPI operates out of the former resort area known as Rosemary Inn, within the Barnes Point area of ONP on the southern shore of Lake Crescent. OPI provides outdoor educational experiences to a wide range of clients with a goal of developing an appreciation of the physical, biological, historical, and cultural diversity of ONP and the Olympic Peninsula, and instilling a sense of environmental stewardship. OPI has operated at this location as a partner with ONP for 15 years. Both OPI and ONP benefit from locating the facility within the park. OPI benefits because the current location provides the staff and clients with a direct connection to park resources which can lead to a better understanding and appreciation of the environment; ONP benefits from the adaptive reuse of the historical resources which is critical to the long-term preservation of the Rosemary Inn Historic District.
