Geotechnical terrain classification has been applied by man. Old settlements and roads localized to easily excavated and even sand grounds are examples of this. As soon as a judgement of the suitability of ground for buildings or roads is made, it is in reality a classification of the geotechnical pre-requisites of the ground. In the project a proposal is presented for a geotechnical classification system for planning applications.
