Development of Shearography for Nondestructive Testing of Highway Structure
The failure of highway structures constitutes a significant source of accidents. The objective of this research was to develop testing methodologies which may lead to early detection of impending structural failures. The research was aimed at a laboratory feasibility study of a new optical technique known as SHEAROGRAPHY for nondestructive testing of highway structural members. Laboratory samples representing typical highway structural members with programmed defects were tested with shearography. These samples included tubular member with an internal crack, butt-weld joint with an imperfection in the weld, riveted joint with a loosened rivet, steel reinforced concrete slab with a broken internal reinforcement rod, and cord reinforced composite plate with the delaminations. All the programmed defects were detected by shearography.
