Saylorville Lake Flood Control Project, Des Moines River, Iowa
The statement proposes to continue construction of Saylorville Lake multi-purpose project for flood control, low-flow augmentation, fish and wildlife management, and recreation. The damsite is located on the Des Moines River in Polk County, Iowa, about 5 miles upstream from the north city limits of Des Moines, Iowa. The dam will be an earth-fill structure with a crest length of 6,750 feet and about 105 feet high creating a permanent pool of approximately 5,400 surface area. The lake will have about 16,700 surface acres at full flood pool. Project also involves development of the Big Creek sub-impoundment with damsite on Big Creek upstream of Saylorville dam. This development will create an 885-surface-acre lake. Benefit-cost ratio for the project if 2.7:1.0. Environmental impacts and adverse environmental effects are discussed.
