Application of Military Guns to High Speed Drilling and Excavation in Rock--Project REAM
In a joint program between the U.S. Army and the Bureau of Mines, military guns have been used to demonstrate a variety of excavation operations in rock. During field tests, 90-mm and 105-mm guns mounted on an M107 carrier were used to drill holes, drive tunnel, form a cut in a surface outcropping and break large boulders. A silencer, developed for the 90-mm system and tested underground for the Bureau of Mines tunneling and mining applications, is proposed to allow surface excavation in peacetime with artillery and tank guns.
