The report discusses the results of research carried out in the third year (1969-70) of the study of highway esthetics. This research dealt with the identification of characteristics having visual and esthetic merit in the highway environment and the many possible interrelationships or interdependencies of these characteristics as variables in highway planning and design. Techniques were devised to identify the relative merits of visual characteristics on a comparative basis and to predict how they might influence improved driver perception and performance. In this way, visual and environmental highway design can be undertaken which emphasizes uniquely valuable visual characteristics relative to different sites. (Author)
